CANNOT LOSE WEIGHT - AM I ON THE WRONG DIET?

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

The aim of this article is to show how to approach weight loss and successfully achieve the desired result. As you read on you will notice it is unlike anything you have read before, focusing on core elements of successful change rather than a must do miracle diet plan. In fact, there is so much more to weight loss than just good or bad plans of food recipes and workouts.

I have been working with clients for almost a decade, helping achieve their goals. Most of them have been recommended by friends and clients who worked with me before. It always starts small with “I want to lose weight” but leads to big transformations and personal development. I have studied and observed throughout my career a repeating pattern stopping us from achieving what we want. Goal setting, wrong approaches, mindset, habits, emotions and fears throughout weight loss process, self-sabotage and lack of self-acceptance are the biggest obstacles contributing towards our failure, and not a the diet plan itself. The fact that you are still reading this text, means this subject is familiar to you or your previous approaches and methods have failed to deliver what you really wanted. I’m slowly getting to the article point - what do you want? Let’s say you WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT. Great! How much weight do you want to lose? Get more specific, so you can be able to put the right strategy in place to get there. Just wanting to lose weight is not enough to get the desired results. Have you ever noticed what prevented you from not getting what you wanted last time and what has sabotaged your progress? Probably not! You were too busy looking around for something or someone to blame - I do not have enough time, I cannot do it, I am too busy, I got frustrated at work, it was beyond my control, I had to eat on the go, I do not cook. I have heard them all before. We are very creative with excuses if we have to be. These excuses may appears small at first but have a profound effect on our disappointments later, when our weight does not drop. Disappointments are a heavy burden to carry, causing lots of negative emotions; anger, frustration, hopelessness and unhappiness, a ticking time bomb ready to explode. And it is just a matter of time before you go back to your comfort zone and old habits, where the food is the best friend giving temporary joy and unconditional happiness… until we look in the mirror again or try on some clothes which do not fit anymore. Sabotaging cycles starts again and we feel trapped and have no idea what to do next, so we just stick with it.

Much of the stress suffered by participants of diet plans is self-imposed. Scary myths and fears of change discourage us to take our weight under control. Very often our fear and emotions decidefor us that we are better off stay where we are now, than to explore other options. We tend to freeze and do nothing. It is not our fault; it is the way we are wired.

Now I want you to stop. Think and ask yourself - what made your previous attempt to lose weight unsuccessful?

Do not worry, no one will judge you. It’s very important and successful at the end not to be arrogant about knowing, but to embrace the fact that we have weaknesses. Yes, we all have them. The more we learn, the more we can realise what we don’t know and what can we change. As Daniel J. Boorstin said, “The biggest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it is illusion of knowledge.”

So how do we set you up for a better start this time?

A massive part of wanting to lose weight and ‘succeeding in getting what you want’, is actually the action and everything in between. Let’s say you are sitting on the sofa on a hot sunny day watching your favourite TV show and suddenly you become thirsty. You want a drink. What do you do? Do you stay on the sofa and continue to watch, thinking of tasty, cold drinks with crushed ice, best for this hot day, or do you take action, pausing the TV show, going to the kitchen or even getting out the house and drive to the shop to get your favourite drink?

Which is it?

Now back to the original question, what caused your failure in your last attempt? Have you truly been willing to lose weight or just wanting it, while remaining seated on the sofa and hoping that weight problems will go away? Are you ready to do what it takes to lose weight? So, which one is it - are you wanting or are you willing to get what you want?

My work provides the biggest insight to why people give up and fail. Those who fail just keep on wanting and rarely go all the way to success! Success requires visualisation, action and patience along with effort and time. The visualisation would represent imagining drinking your favourite beverage and how it is served with crushed iced or your favourite cup. Action is every little step you take to get that drink. Patience is the time you spend executing the action, getting to the shop, queuing, looking for the glass. All that process requires effort and time to get what you want. The same applies to weight loss. Progress doesn’t happen by chance; it happens by taking action.
